No matter what season of the year Oak Creek Canyon is the most scenic drive in Northern Arizona. If you follow south route 89A from Flagstaff to Sedona, you’ll be amazed by the impeccable birds eye view of the canyon. We recommend a stop at Oak Creek Canyon Vista viewpoint located on your left side right before you hit the switchbacks. Take this opportunity for photos or just take a few minutes to soak up the view – it’s spectacular.
While the view of the canyon is breathtaking and worth the drive in itself, Oak Creek canyon boasts with wildlife, lushes forest, babbling Oak Creek, and towering red rocks. Hiking is a popular activity for many visitors in the spring and fall season. We love showing off the beauty of the canyon when various shades of orange, red and yellow seam the winding road leading you to the famous red rock country of Sedona – it’s magical.
Along the way to Sedona, you will find a historic establishment to your right called Indian Gardens Café and Market. It was built in 1947 and has served many purposes over the years: general store, gas station, sandwich shop, bar and more. It’s always been a gathering place for residents and visitors alike. We can stop here for a snack or take some time to browse for souvenirs.
During the summer, Slide Rock State Park is a prime destination for many visitors. The natural water slides created through algae on the red rocks is a fun adventure for the entire family. Alternatively, you can soak up the sun on the banks of Oak Creek or spend your time in the wading pool. The natural water slides are part of the 43-acre historic apple farm – a beautiful setting for a delicious picnic in-between the adrenaline-pumping water slides.
Before you reach Up Town Sedona you have to cross Midgely Bridge. Before you cross the bridge, you’ll find a small parking lot to your right… and for good reason – it’s a must stop for all photography enthusiasts. The picture opportunities are incredible: majestic red rock formations in contrast to the blue sky.
